Types of long-distance trains #

  • High-speed and very high-speed. They gather speed from 140 to 200 km/h, and their average speed, taking stops into account, is not less than 91 km/h.
  • Fast. Their average speed is 50–91 km/h. Fast trains with an increased level of comfort are called branded.
  • Passenger. Their average speed is up to 50 km/h. Passenger trains stop more often than the fast ones, and their stops are longer.

Train numbering #

Train number Train type
1–150 fast year-round
151–298 fast seasonal and one-time traffic
301–450, 601–696 passenger year-round
451–598 seasonal and one-time passenger
701–750 high-speed
751–788 very high-speed
801–898 fast, serviced by motor-car trains

Trains going north and east have even numbers, while those going south and west have odd numbers. When the train changes the direction, the number changes to a pair, for example 1/2 or 123/124. Trains with the same numbers do not meet at the same station and do not follow the same route.

To make the train number unique, a letter is added to it, which indicates the departure or arrival road of the train. For example, for the 109V train, the digit indicates the train number, and the “V” letter indicates that the train follows the Volga railway.

  • There are 54 berths and 81 seats in non-compartment cars.
  • There are 36 berths in the compartment cars: 4 berths in each compartment. The lower berths in the compartment cars are odd. In some compartment cars, passengers can be given a passenger car attendants' compartment, and the first passenger compartment is given to the passenger car attendants.
  • In passenger cars there is a double service compartment for passenger car attendants.
  • There are 16 or 18 berths in the “Lux” (SC) type cars, usually the lower ones. The last single compartment is for the passenger car attendant.
  • There are 22 berths in international cars if the compartment is double, and 33 if it is triple.
