How to read the fare rules

Table of Content

As a rule, an airline ticket (unless we are talking about a simple one-way flight without transfers) is divided into several sections, each of which has its own fare rules. It is very important to look at the rules for each flight section, since the rules for the most “strict” fare apply to the entire ticket. The flight section is indicated by the following “header”:

1 - PSGR P1 ADT RULES DISPLAY
FARE COMPONENT 1 ADT MOWAAQ SU QPXRF PU 1 S
FCL: QPXRF TRF: 304 RULE: RERF BK: Q
PTC: ADT-ADULT FTC: XPX-INSTANT PURCHASE EXCURSION
PE.PENALTIES

This “header” contains service information about the flight section, fare code, and so on.

Return #

The rules for ticket return are described in the CANCELLATIONS section. The most common formulations are as follows:

  • TICKET IS NON-REFUNDABLE or REFUND IS NOT PERMITTED–the ticket is non-refundable;
  • ANY TIME TICKET IS NON-REFUNDABLE–the ticket is non-refundable at any time;
  • TICKET IS NON-REFUNDABLE IN CASE OF NO-SHOW–the ticket is non-refundable in case of no-show on the flight.

For example,

CANCELLATIONS PERMITTED FOR CANCEL/REFUND.
NOTE - FULL FARE PAID IF TICKET IS PRESENTED FOR A REFUND
MORE THAN 24 HOURS BEFORE DEPARTURE TIME SHOWN
ON THE FIRST FLIGHT COUPON.
FARE PAID LESS 25 PERCENT IF TICKET IS PRESENTED
FOR A REFUND LESS THAN 24 HOURS BEFORE DEPARTURE
TIME SHOWN ON THE FIRST FLIGHT COUPON.

Annotation: Cancellation is possible. Note: the full price of the ticket is refundable if the ticket is returned more than 24 hours before the departure of the first flight segment. If a ticket is returned less than 24 hours before the departure of the first flight segment, a penalty of 25% of the fare withholds.

In this case, there will most often be information somewhere below about the airline’s withholding fee for the return procedure, for example:

FOR REFUND OF FARES ORIGINATING IN RUSSIA - AT ANY
TIME IF PASSENGER VOLUNTARILY REQUESTS FOR FULL
OR PARTIAL REFUND ADDITIONAL REFUND CHARGE OF
25.00 EUR PER INTERNATIONAL SERVICES OR 900RUB FOR
DOMESTIC -E TICKET OR PAPER TICKET- SHALL APPLY.

Annotation: For tickets for which the carriage begins in Russia, at any time a fee of 25 euros for international flights or 900 rubles for flights within Russia is withheld for full or partial refund.

ANYTIME ADDITIONAL REFUND CHARGE 1490 RUB FOR
REFUND PROCEDURE PER TICKET IS APPLIED

Translation: At any time there is an additional charge for the return procedure in the amount of 1,490 rubles.

The “AFTER DEPARTURE” section describes the conditions for the ticket return after the departure of the aircraft, but only if the passenger started the flight, for example, flew on the first flight section and did not use the second one. If the passenger did not use the ticket and did not apply before departure for the removal of the seat, the “NO SHOW” rules apply, that is, no-show on the flight.

AFTER DEPARTURE CANCELLATIONS PERMITTED FOR CANCEL/REFUND.
NOTE -
REFUND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE FARE PAID AND
THE APPLICABLE FARE FOR THE TRANSPORTATION USED
IN EFFECT ON THE DAY OF ORIGINAL TICKET ISSUE
IF TICKET IS PRESENTED FOR A REFUND MORE THAN
24 HOURS BEFORE DEPARTURE TIME SHOWN ON THE
UNUSED FLIGHT COUPONS.

Annotation: A refund of the difference between the fare applied (for the entire ticket) and the actual fare for the used segment on the date of ticket issuance, if the ticket is presented for return more than 24 hours before the time of departure of the unused segment.

This means that if the client has purchased a return ticket and wants to cancel the return ticket, according to the fare rules half of the one-way fare will be deducted from the sum paid by the client, but not half of the one-way fare available on the date of the ticket. Since a one-way fare is usually comparable in cost to a round-trip fare, it can easily turn out that there is nothing to return.

Exchange #

The exchange rules are described in the section with the subtitle CHANGES. The CHANGES ARE NOT PERMITTED line means that changes are not allowed, and in this case it is not possible to change the flight dates.

If under the CHANGES word there is the phrase CHARGE EUR 30.00, the flight on such a ticket can be rescheduled to another date with a penalty of EUR 30 per passenger. It is possible that a penalty is charged for changing the dates of each flight in the route if it includes several flights. However, this does not mean that your losses will be limited to 30 euros. According to the airline’s rules, it is possible to change the ticket with minimal losses only if there are seats for the new desired dates at the same fare according to which the first ticket was issued. For example, there may be about ten fares in economy class. If the original fare is no longer available, you will have to pay the price difference to the more expensive fare.

If you want to change the route of your trip, pay attention to the REROUTING word in the fare rules. According to the general rule, if a route change is allowed, it is possible only within the route network of the same airline and, most often, within one part of the world, for example, Europe.

If there are several flights by different airlines in one ticket or different fares are used, then, as a rule, the strictest rules apply to the entire ticket.
